I don't know about you, but I hate wasted space. Looking at that void under my table saw's right side extension table, I knew I could put it to use. I dug out some scrap cherry ply and milled some hard maple and started working up a design.

My intent to is to mount the cabinet to the bottom of the side table through the top of the cabinet.

I used the maple to make some interior frames using bridle joints, glue and brads. The frame pieces are approximately 7/8" thick and 1-1/2" wide. I plan to glue and screw them to the 1" cherry ply casework. Glue and screws will be use to butt joint the casework. All the screws will be covered with strips of maple trim. The face frame will also be maple while the four drawer fronts will be the same cherry ply. I will probably use maple edgebanding on the drawer fronts, because that's what I have laying around.

To date, the interior frames are cut to size. The side, interior and back panels are just rough cut. Here are a couple of pics of my 'test' layout/assembly.

These pics are of the cabinet laying on it's back side. When installed beneath the side table, it will lay flat and have four drawers.

It's about 34" wide, 12" tall and 31" deep. It will get a poly finish before it's installed.

Obviously, I need to square things up, trim the case pieces and really put it together. Hopefully, I will get that work done by the end of next weekend and start on making the drawers after that.

Have a great day.

Bruce, AKA FLWoodRat :)

Bruce,

Great to see you starting another project. I have thought about doing something in that space, but then my cabinet saw is on a mobile stand. Once and a rare while I do need to move the saw to get at some lumber stored to the side of it. The thought of having a cabinet full of saw blades and other assorted accessories attached to the saw base would then make it too heavy or difficult to move. Walnutbegal as a contractor saw and has built a mobile base cabinet...believe it is from the plans by Shopnotes. The cabinet is really neat...it has drawers for storage and an area for collecting the saw dust.

Keep up the project thread, I for one always like following along someones build.

Chuck, Thanks for the encouragement. My TS is also on a mobile base. However, I am re-arranging my shop and hope to be able to leave the TS in position and build an outfeed table behind it. Of course I will post that too if there is any interest.

Bruce

Tommy, it's not a mission. It's sorta like what my 79 year old father in law said 2 yrs ago when he married a much younger and very pretty lady... "Why put good wood to waste?" That's all I'm trying to do here. Use the wood I have in my shop and get some things done. The positive encouragement we receive here just keeps me going towards MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! :D

Made some more progress on the Table Saw Storage Cabinet this weekend. The cherry ply carcass is built and the hard maple internal frames, face frame and trim is applied. Here are a few pics of my progress. Hopefully this weekend I can get a couple of coats of poly on it to bring out the contrast of the woods. My plan it to build and install four drawers with full extension glides. Overal dimensions are approximately 12" tall, 34" wide and 31" deep. When done, it will be mounted under the right side table using cabinet screws.

Comments and criticism always appreciated. It's how I learn!

Don't you just love the grain pattern in the panels? I sure do.

Have a great day.

Bruce, that's looking pretty good, I like the maple & cherry together.

One can never have too much storage in the shop.

Well, after getting a couple of spit coats of #1 cut shellac I installed the cabinet under my TS today. Had a good friend come over and help.

Here's what it looks like:

Next step is to build the four drawers that go in it and then install them.

Have a great day. Comments and critism appreciated from this knowledgible group

Lookin' good Bruce. I have the same saw, but right tilting with a unifence.... the same mobile base.... it is a lot of wasted space, I've been meaning to do exactly what you're doing and use some of that big void under the table.... just haven't gotten around to it yet. Unfortunately shop projects have lost some of their priority at my house... the to do list is getting too big :D

take it easy

Bruce.............I was wondering where the unit was going to set. NICE!!!!..........The comment Dave made about that wasted space is absolutely spot-on, I've been in a shop project mode lately, router table and recently sharpening station/movable work surface for my scroll saw, and some re-organizing of tools; the issue with my saw is the location of my clean-out door. I need the room for the door to swing to get under the saw plus enough room so I'm not constantly whacking my Knogg'in.

Nice work.....You got me thinking though, thanks!!!!............Neil

I finally got some time off to start building the drawers. Unfortunately, I only bought enough wood to make two of the four I need. The pics that follow will show my first ever attempt at hand cutting dove tails. Trust me, it's not as easy as Tommy makes it look. However, after watching his videos, sharpening my chisels and laying them out with my MLW Four Pack I managed to get all 40 sets of pins and tails cut.

Not having a tail vice, I made a jig to hold the boards for cutting. I used a jorgensen parallel clamp and a squeeze clamp to keep it on my bench, and a couple of squeeze clamps to hold the board to the jig. Next shop investment will be a tail vice.

FYI, I cut the top set using a Big Box Store Japanese style pull saw and tried to cut out the waste using my jig saw. I didnt like the results, but I got my first ever corporate shop sponsor who wanted to use a picture of them in his store ("The Gap")

I sought guidance on a real Dovetail saw. Our friend Tommy Mac recommended the Gramercy saw. I bought it and used it to cut the tails for the bottom drawers. That saw is SWEET!.The waste was chiseled out. Very little paring was needed. WOOHOO!

Next time I will cut all the pins and tails with the Gramercy.

Have a great day in your shop.

Rat

Guess what guys? Yep, I finished the project. The drawers and done, installed and filled with goodies.

Here are a few pics.

The completed storage unit

Bottom Drawers

Did you notice my MLW Four Pak in the right hand drawer. It also holds an old Stanley Bedrock 606, two Stanley block planes, a Sargeant #4 and the LN 4.5 Hd Smoother.

The left hand drawer holds my Freud Stacked Dado set spare blades and other goodies.

Bottom Drawer fully extended. Check out the MLW Decal. Cool eh?

Right hand Top drawer extended.

This is where I keep all my lay out and measuring stuff.

Have a great day.

I did a similar thing but underneath the left leaf of my table saw which is also a unisaw. I put a cabinet with door mounted on the saw and I have all my saw blades, dado blades and tools for installing blades as well as tools for keeping the saw tuned up. Having my blades right at the saw makes me more inclined to be willing to swap blades. Man, I'm lazy...If things aren't convenient I will always find a reason to not bother.
